Anaar Back to the app

Privacy policy

Last updated November 7, 2026

Anaar is a food-label scanner made by Ahmadzai Group. This page says what the app collects, why it needs each thing, who else handles it, and how to get rid of it. It is written in plain language on purpose: if anything here is unclear, write to us and we will fix the wording.

What we collect

Your account

To sign in you give us an email address and a password, and we keep a first and last name for the profile. Your password is handled by Firebase Authentication and we never see it. We send a six-digit code to your email address to confirm it is yours, and again if you change it or reset your password.

What you scan

When you scan a product we store the barcode, the time, and a short summary of the product so your history can be shown to you offline. Products you save are kept the same way. This is the history you see on the home screen, and it is yours — nobody else can read it.

Photographs of labels

If a product is not in the catalogue you can photograph its nutrition label. That photograph is uploaded to our storage, read automatically to extract the nutrition panel and ingredient list, and the resulting product is added to the shared catalogue so the next person who scans that barcode gets it. The photograph itself is never shown to other people, and the app cannot read it back. Please do not include anything personal in the frame — we only need the label.

Reports

If you report a problem with a product we store the product, the reason you chose, whatever you typed, and an optional photograph, along with your account identifier so we can follow up if we need to.

Diagnostics and usage

The app sends crash reports and product analytics — which screens are used and which actions are taken — so we can find what is broken and what is confusing. We also count how many label reads you have asked for each day, to enforce a daily limit.

Notifications

If you let the app send notifications, we store a push token for your device so we can tell you when your label has been read. You can turn notifications off in the app or in your phone's settings, and the token stops being used.

The camera

The app uses the camera only while you are scanning a barcode or photographing a label. Barcodes are decoded on your phone. No video is recorded, and no image leaves your phone except a label or report photograph you deliberately send.

What we do not collect

We do not collect your location, your contacts, your photo library, or an advertising identifier. There is no advertising in Anaar. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

Who else handles it

These are the companies that process data on our behalf, and what each one sees.

Who What they handle
Google (Firebase and Google Cloud) Sign-in, the database, file storage, notifications and the servers the app talks to.
Google Cloud Vertex AI Reads the nutrition label in a photograph you send, and returns the text on it.
Sentry Crash reports: what went wrong, on what kind of device, in what version.
PostHog Product analytics: which screens and actions are used.
USDA FoodData Central Receives a barcode when we look a product up. It is a public database and it learns nothing about you.

These services run on servers in the United States, so your information is processed there. We do not give your personal information to anyone else, and we do not sell it.

How long we keep it

Your account, your history and your saved products stay until you delete them or delete your account, and are then erased within 30 days. Label photographs are kept after the read, so that a product built from one can be checked and corrected, and are erased with your account on the same schedule. Crash reports and analytics are kept for a limited period by the services above under their own retention settings. A product in the shared catalogue stays in the catalogue — it is about a food, not about you, and it carries no link back to who contributed it.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from the Account screen in the app. Deleting it signs you out everywhere immediately and permanently, and your profile, your history, your saved products, your label photographs and your push tokens are erased within 30 days. It cannot be undone, and we do not keep a copy to let you change your mind.

You can also ask us to delete your account by writing to info@tryanaar.com from the address you signed up with, and we will do it for you. You do not need the app installed to ask.

Reports you have filed and products added to the shared catalogue are not removed, because other people rely on them, but they do not identify you.

Your choices

Depending on where you live you may have further rights — in Canada under PIPEDA and provincial privacy laws, and in the United States under state laws such as California's. Write to us and we will honour them.

Children

Anaar is not meant for children. You must be at least 13 to have an account, and we do not knowingly collect anything from a child under 13. If you believe a child has an account, tell us and we will remove it.

Security

Everything travels over an encrypted connection and is stored on Google Cloud. Your history, your saved products and your photographs are readable only by your own account and by the parts of our backend that need them. No system is perfect, so if you believe something has gone wrong, please tell us.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect, and the date at the top of this page will change.
